sculptural-raku-vase
Sculptural Raku Vase

A striking statement piece that blends organic form with modern sophistication. This sculptural vase was wheel-thrown, hand-altered, and sculpted to achieve its distinctive asymmetrical shape. I always let the clay guide me through the build, moving in whichever way it prefers—an organic process that ensures no two vases are ever alike.

The raku firing process
This vase was made using the raku firing process: a Japanese technique that involves taking pots out of the kiln while still in a hot, orange, molten glow. In the western version of raku, once removed, the pots are placed in a container with combustibles like newspaper or sawdust where they catch fire and are covered with a lid until cooled.

This particular piece was finished with a classic white crackle glaze, taken out of the kiln and blown on repeatedly to cool and crack the glaze before being added to newspaper to burn. The grey between the cracks is carbon from the fire that is trapped in the clay during the sealed cooling process. The many variables in raku firing create a unique, one-of-a-kind piece of pottery that can never be replicated.

Artisan details:

Wheel-thrown and hand-sculpted with asymmetrical, organic form

White crackle raku glaze with carbon markings

Minimalist aesthetic with rich depth and visual interest

Versatile style that bridges earthy and modern aesthetics

Perfect for:

Displaying as a standalone sculptural art piece

Styling with dried flowers, grasses, or branches

Adding architectural interest to shelves, mantles, or tables

Creating a focal point in modern, minimalist, or organic interiors

Product Details
Material: High-fired stoneware
Finish: White crackle raku glaze with carbon markings
Dimensions: Approximately 8.5" H × 6" diameter (at widest point)
Care: Due to the type of stoneware used, this piece is NOT watertight.
