Perhaps the most dramatic and exciting pottery method around, raku firing is a Japanese technique that involves taking pots out of the kiln while still in a hot, orange, molten glow. Once removed, they are placed in a container with combustibles like newspaper or sawdust where they catch fire and are covered with a lid until cooled.

This particular piece was finished with a classic white crackle glaze, taken out of the kiln and blown on repeatedly to cool and crack the glaze before being added to newspaper to burn. The black between the cracks is where all of the the clay has turned black in the sealed cooling process. The many variables in raku firing create a unique, one-of-a-kind piece of pottery that can never be replicated.

For decorative use only. Raku vessels are not watertight and will absorb (and leak) water. To use the vase for fresh flowers, insert a florist's tube with water inside. May also be used to contain dry materials.

Do not wash or wipe with a wet cloth.
